Mary's Story

Longfellow neighborhood

We all carry experiences of our neighborhoods, the stories that make this place home. As North Oakland continues to grow and change, Commons Archive is gathering neighbors' memories to preserve the area’s many histories. In February we distributed story collection boxes throughout the neighborhood. Unfortunately, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, this process has been put on hold.

Sharing stories and experiences help us feel closer to our neighbors and support long term neighborhood stability. With several neighborhood groups, we are currently developing ‘Block By Block’, a new way to safely connect with neighbors.  While creating emergency response systems, we’ll also be creating ways for neighbors to listen to and document each others’ stories.

Oakland Public Library’s Oakland History Center and the California Historical Society are collecting your experiences about living during this unprecedented time. Share your story and make history!
