Mellana Café, 4539 Martin Luther King, Jr. Way (at 46th)

A wonderful warm surprise for neighbors of North Oakland who frequented the newly established Mellana Café for their morning coffee and delicious fresh juices, and got to meet the Black Panther Elder Dr Saturu Ned with the HEAR/HERE truck! The café was once the historic ‘Johnson’s Barber Shop’ that was open for 64 years (1954 - 2018)! It was thrilling to hear the stories of the longtime neighbors who knew the barbershop, and hear the story of the second generation Yemeni family who carries the legacy forth with providing healthy, nourishing food options while keeping the tradition of a friendly, neighborhood spot.
