Location: Dover Park, 5707 Dover Street

North Oakland is a place with a very rich history and the Dover Street Park is no different. The parkland area was once part of the old Merritt College campus, the founding grounds of the Black Panther Party. Now a community park for the residents in the neighborhood, this vital greenspace features a large community garden filled with flowers, vegetables and an orchard. Though the neighbors around the park have changed, the essence and beliefs of the Pathers remain here today.
Bring a picnic and join us to hear the stories from neighbors who have been here through all of the neighborhood’s changes. The Nelson’s family history in the neighborhood goes back three generations! Now one of the few Black families on the block, they are the holders are many stories that they will share with neighbors.
Dr Saturu Ned, original member of the Black Panther Party, will share stories about the rich Panther history, rooted right in this neighborhood. Members of the Dover Park Edible Garden, founded on the principles of the Panther Survival Programs, will talk about their work.
Meet your neighbors & break bread together!
