With funding from Berkeley’s Civic Arts, we are pleased to partner with Self-Help Hunger Program (SHHP).

The Self-Help Hunger Program is dedicated to making a positive change in North Oakland and South Berkeley. Started in 2009 by Black Panther ‘Aunti’ Frances Moore, SHHP’s food pantry provides fresh produce and warm meals to over 500 people every week.

Located in Driver Plaza along South Berkeley and North Oakland’s border this is a historic epicenter for local Black culture and a community living room for many displaced neighbors with generational ties to the area.

Using the HEAR HERE Community Billboard, we’ll give voice and visibility to unhoused neighbors by documenting and sharing their memories through neighbor-scale listening sessions.

Be on the look out as the HEAR HERE Community Billboard travels the neighborhood sharing recorded stories, songs, spoken word and images of the area’s disappearing rich history.

“Lifting up the voices that normally are not heard especially during this time of gentrification, displacement, and homelessness will be a healing medicine for those releasing their stories.

— Aunti Frances Moore, Black Panther Party Elder, founder of Self-Help Hunger Program, and community activist
