The community showed up to breathe new life into this beautiful park nestled near Lake Merritt. Oakland Councilmember Nikki Bas’ team supported neighbors in creating an inclusive gathering. Prior to the COVID pandemic, the park hosted a very active neighbor-led community garden group in the park. Through community meetings, Council staff have learned that neighbors are wondering how they can come together again---concerns range from support for unhoused community members, loss of local businesses and upticks in crime.

Reflections from the organizers:

“Having the engagement team there and the visual presence of the truck provided opportunities for neighbors/community members to have a space to think and share about how they are part of the larger community, and consider ways to get more involved. It also highlighted the FM Smith Park as a place for neighbors to come together in welcoming space and ponder other ways they can utilize the park for future events.”
